Rheumatology is the pathology most treated in France in thermal centers
Pain, stiffness and swelling of the joints, tendonitis, back pain, nocturnal awakenings ... Pathologies that affect the joints, spine and bones cause suffering and difficulty of movement that affect the quality of life. To reduce this pain and promote mobility, the prescribed solutions are mainly based on pharmaceutical treatments added to non-pharmacological management, such as physiotherapy sessions. Surgical intervention may also be necessary if there is a mechanical obstacle.
For a better treatment in rheumatology, a global approach to the pathology is essential, in which thermal medicine has an important place. The thermal treatments provided, with a sedative and rehabilitative objective, improve mobility and reduce pain, which leads to less drug use.
The spa treatment is a medical treatment, using natural mineral spring waters (REM), approved by the National Academy of Medicine and its derived products (gases, sludge), in different forms of care, to treat or alleviate specific pathologies. The Regional Health Agencies (ARS) periodically control the quality of the MNEs.
The cure is usually the trigger in these patients. By regaining their self-confidence, they resume activities that have sometimes been neglected for a few years and then adopt a healthy lifestyle, which can help curb the disease.
Osteoarthritis - Degenerative rheumatism - Painful syndromes - Postoperative - Inflammatory rheumatism (apart from progressive flare-ups) - Rheumatoid arthritis - Sequelae of osteoarticular trauma - Fibromyalgia - Joint stiffness - Chronic pain
The curists receive, throughout the cure, 4 treatments a day for 18 consecutive days, in rheumatology. The treatments carried out by the thermal agents are of a very different nature, whether collective (swimming pool, general mud, vaporarium) or individual (baths, steam baths). They can also be accompanied by massages performed by physiotherapists.
For chronic pathologies (osteoarthritis, inflammatory rheumatism, etc.), we first seek to relieve pain and reduce the consumption of anti-inflammatory drugs. Thermal water is used directly in baths (thermal water and / or mud), which completely permeate the body, relax painful joints and peripheral muscles (those that support the defective joint).
The educational component, in a second step, is based on maintaining regular physical activities (soft gym classes, Pilates, ...), learning postures and approaches that relieve (workshops on "gestures and postures", "bon dos ", ...), as well as the introduction of a new lifestyle, which allows to stop the pathology (diet, ...).
For the consequences of fractures, traumatic sequelae or surgical interventions, the objective is to reduce pain by gradually re-educating the injured limb: active thermal pools strengthen the muscles, which better support the joints and regenerate flexibility.
