Canigó Grand Site Occitanie

 A sacred mountain, a legendary massif

The Canigó, emblem of the Pyrénées-Orientales was awarded the Grand Site de France label in 2012, the label was renewed in 2018 for a period of 6 years.
This label guarantees respectful and sustainable management of the site, the preservation of landscapes, flora and fauna, the quality of public reception and the integration of inhabitants and partners into the life of the site.
 
The Canigó Grand Site Mixed Syndicate, which brings together the department, the municipalities of the territory and the National Forestry Office, must fulfill three main missions:
 
1. The preservation and enhancement of landscapes and natural and cultural heritage
2. Management and dissemination of traffic flows
3. Support for local and sustainable economic development
 
The scope of action of the Canigó Grand Site Syndicate is one of the most extensive in France and is full of unique and unspoiled places.
 
- The classified site of the massif, which brings together three nature reserves and three Natura 2000 sites.
- The territory labeled Grand site de France which brings together 50 municipalities and which aims to make known the natural and cultural heritage but also to make visitors aware of their protection.
- The Tourist destination, Canigó sacred mountain of the Catalans, which brings together 80 municipalities.
 
At the same time, the Syndicat Mixte Canigó Grand Site is joining forces with the Communities of Municipalities and Tourist Offices to create a global tourist destination, carry out hiking routes, support economic projects and ensure the promotion of the territory.

The Canigó País Català destination is supported by three communities of municipalities representing 80 municipalities, as well as the Syndicat Mixe du Canigó. The three communities of municipalities are: Conflent Canigó, Roussillon Conflent in the Têt valley, and Haut Vallespir in the Tech valley.
The destination is classified as a Grand Site de France and Grand Site Régional. Four tourist offices and tourist information centers are available throughout the region.
