Goigs Dels Ous

The Goigs dels Ous are at the heart of Catalan traditions during the Easter celebration.

A Catalan tradition, the Goigs dels Ous, meaning "joy of the eggs," are mostly Catalan songs that were sung from house to house on the eve of Easter. Originally, these were hymns dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the saints, sung in Catalan. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages (12th century). In the 16th century, more popular songs emerged, focusing on everyday life themes.

During the Easter celebrations, this deeply rooted tradition continues, and the Easter "hymn" of the Goigs dels Ous will once again resonate through the streets of our town, as well as throughout Roussillon. These songs, both religious and secular, bring joy—the joy of Christian Resurrection, but also the joy of spring and its promising renewal.

In exchange for these joyful messages, the singers of goigs and cantarelles will receive local products in their cistella (a wicker basket with a handle): eggs, wine, charcuterie, and other delicacies to be shared together.
