The Amélie-les-Bains Carnival comes to a spectacular close with the setting ablaze of the Grégoire, an unmissable tradition in the Haut Vallespir region. The Grégoires Améliens joyfully perpetuate the ancient rites of the procession and Ash Wednesday to close a festive week and launch the year under the best auspices. His Carnival Majesty, "Grégoire", escorted by a Swiss guard, a corpse and a cobla, marches through the town followed by a colourful procession of villagers dressed in white, pointy hats and a convivial atmosphere. After her tour, Her Majesty is led to the pyre for a spectacular bonfire, surrounded by a lively farandole. The evening continues with the grand white costume ball and the traditional Tio-Tio, a festive occasion not to be missed!
